List Building With List Coops and Coregistration Services I
I had a mind to just leave this out of my book altogether, but there are some who use these successfully, so I figured it best to leave this section in.
The first thing I want to talk about is spam. If you send anyone an email and they did not specifically request to receive information, you are spamming them, which is illegal in the United States and in many other jurisdictions.
So I want to say right up front that I am not talking about 'buying leads'. Under no circumstances should you be 'buying leads'. No matter how many times someone tells you they have opted in…it is all a lie, or smoke and mirrors. If they did not opt in for you, then you are spamming them.
The idea with list coops and coregistration services is a little different. In these cases, you partner with other marketers who are looking for similar leads to the ones you are looking for. And when you advertise (or the coop does) they present a squeeze page with several check boxes, one for the visitor to opt in to your list, another for them to opt in to someone else's list, etc. So if the person opts in to all ten of the lists on that one page (assuming there are 10) – then all of you will receive that lead. Many of the list coops offer double opt in, although it drives the price up significantly.
So from a technical standpoint, these are legal leads. However, be sure that when you receive the opt in, you also receive the opt in information, such as the time stamp and the ip address of the computer from which the person opted in.
